Marathon Update

  We are delighted to bring an update from the runners from Dulwich who completed their own marathon last week.  Tom Fender tell us more.     We set off at 8am on Saturday morning.  The weather was warm but it was a bit cloudy – this made running conditions perfect.  No wind or rain.  Susie had missed five weeks of running due to an achillies injury in the run up to Saturday which we all had in the back of our minds….but thankfully, her achillies held out brilliantly. We ran as a group the whole way round.  We had loads of friends and family support us on the route – including Leo Fender being our ‘outrider’ for the whole route.  Friends and family set up water / drinks/snack stations every 6-7km on average which was a godsend as 26 miles is quite a long way to go without refreshments and fuel/energy. Our route took us from Brockwell Park/Herne Hill to Brixton, Clapham, back to Herne Hill, Loughborough Junction, Camberwell, Kings College Hospital, Denmark Hill, …

Dulwich Croquet Fundraiser

Over the Summer Solstice weekend Dulwich Sports Club held an exhausting but fun croquet marathon raising funds for both the club and St Christopher’s Hospice. For many lock-down has meant no sport at all, so Guy Scurfield and Peter Haydon of the croquet section decided to create some excitement. Croquet is one of the few sports where social distancing is easy to maintain while still giving the pleasure of knocking a ball about! All sections of the club were invited to join them on a 25-hour slog, and overnight 50 people, many usually tennis, hockey, cricket or squash players as well as croquet stalwarts, made up doubles partnerships to see them through the night. They started at noon on Saturday (20) and finished with muscles aching and eyes going out of focus, at 1pm on Sunday lunchtime.  So far they have raised over £4000.   You can still donate via their fundraising page. The Importance Of Taking Regular Breaks

I’m very lucky. I have an outdoor studio and once I have finished writing this article, I will get myself ready to take a break out there. I’ll actually lie down on my mat, I’ll get my bolster out and I’ll use my lovely lavender eye cushion. Ready to take a short break. And the reason I do this is it improves creativity, it improves focus, it improves productivity. I see me getting better value from the work I do by taking regular breaks, and it is not just me, it is not just anecdotal evidence. The Benefits Of Short Breaks Some of us are still in lockdown and working from home. Work and private live can blur together into one long day for some of us. How to Deal with Your Emotions and Stay Calm and Positive

It’s human nature to not want to feel pain (emotional or physical pain) and this is why we often prefer to ‘bottle up’ negative emotions rather than feeling them and expressing them. Another aspect of this is that many of us have grown up without being shown how to express our emotions in a healthy way and so we can become afraid of them. We’re scared of a bad reaction or confrontation when we do say how we feel. We may also have learnt to believe certain emotions are ‘wrong’, such as anger, fear, dissapointment, sadness or jelousy. The truth is these emotions are natural and normal and they just need acknowledging (even just to yourself) to become ‘unstuck’, allowing you to release them and feel better. What happens to suppressed emotions? We push our feelings down but by doing this they don’t go away. They sit beneath the surface and can affect us negatively in different ways.
