Link Age Southwark launches Bloomin’ Lovely

Local charity Link Age Southwark has launched a brand new project with the aim of bringing colour and nature back to the lives of older people in Southwark, but they need your help to make it happen. Bloomin’ Lovely is a fundraiser with a vision of gifting plants to older people who have been unable to leave their homes for many weeks due to the COVID-19 crisis. Throughout the pandemic, the charity have been supporting over 60s who have been unable to do any kind of shopping, which includes buying plants and flowers to spruce up their homes and gardens. This project aims to raise funds to deliver bedding plants, a bunch of flowers or a houseplant to show our older friends that the local community hasn’t forgotten them. A willing band of volunteer gardeners will deliver the plants and can also offer practical help with planting and tidying garden spaces to ensure our older friends’ gardens aren’t left untended. The charity’s fundraising goal is £5,000 which is being raised through an online crowdfunder page …

The quiz will take place live from our Facebook page on Wednesday 1st July at 7.30pm. Follow Link Age Southwark to watch it live on the night. After the success of their previous two lockdown quizzes, Andrew has kindly agreed to return and host another fun and intriguing evening. Play with those at home or join a team using video calling. As always it’s free to take part, but Link Age Southwark ask you to consider making a £5 donation per team towards their Bloomin’ Lovely fundraiser – a new project to adapt their gardening service and supply plants and flowers to brighten up the homes and gardens of older people who are shielding during the COVID-19 pandemic. Funding from the project will also help to make up the shortfall from their cancelled community fundraising events which raise vital funds to facilitate their services. Link Age Southwark adapts services for older people in Southwark and achieves top quality standard award!

The past two months have been trying for the whole community. And charities such as Link Age Southwark have had to step up to a whole new level while serving the needs of our older people. With the social distancing rules in place due to the COVID-19 pandemic, they have had to suspend their over 20 groups and converted face to face befriending relationships to telephone befriending. Fortunately, with their amazing army of volunteers, they have risen to the challenge and have succeeded in reaching out to even more older people, having set up over 40 new matches on top of their 160 existing ones. Their group volunteers and tutors have been heroes too, keeping up their activities with group members, conducting chats, singing and exercise over the telephone and Zoom.  Link Age Southwark has also set up a shopping service for the first time for people who are completely isolated.
