After the huge successes of Old Herbaceous, Three Men in a Boat and Choice Grenfell, South East based theatre company, Kick In The Head Productions, are bringing the highly acclaimed play, Florence ‘Flo’ Smith Now & Then to Bell House in Dulwich.
The show is based on the book of the same name written by Christopher Saul and taken from the real-life audio recordings he made of his paternal grandmother, Flo Smith, when he was a drama student working on his dissertation. He sat in her cosy living room in North London, drinking copious amounts of tea and listening avidly while spool after spool of his tape recorder was filled with her recollections.
From the Boer War to The Summer of Love, Flo Smith, daughter, sister, wife, mother, widow and grandmother recalls with horror, humour, tears and joy those turbulent times at home and in the world beyond her front door.
One review described the show as “funny, poignant, often both at once, Flo is both an engaging personal story and the best kind of history lesson”.
Ursula Mohan, who lives locally in Dulwich, takes on this amazing one-woman performance but is no stranger to challenging, demanding roles. Her professional career has spanned all her working life from playing Joyce the cockney clippie in many episodes of On the Buses, performances with the RSC and her highly acclaimed performance as a female Lear.
Producer Giles Shenton says he hope this will be the start of an ongoing partnership with Bell House. “We are already looking ahead to next year where we are planning to bring further productions to Bell House that compliments the great work they do as an educational charity in offering support outside the mainstream school curriculum.”
