Upcoming charity art auction brings together members of the public, celebrities and highly coveted artists to showcase the meaning and significance of art to everyone – including those nearing the end of life – and perfectly illustrates St Christopher’s belief that art should be accessible to all.
Between Thursday 9th and Sunday 19th September, St Christopher’s Hospice in South London is offering everyone the chance to bid on hundreds of original postcard-sized works of art; submitted by world-renowned artists, global celebrities and local creatives alike.
Through a mystery online auction, bidders can select the piece they’re most drawn to and compete against other buyers to get their hands on a priceless yet affordable addition to their collection; with the twist being that only after every lot is sold will St Christopher’s confirm the artist identity behind each postcard.
Art has always played a large part in the lives of staff, residents and volunteers at St Christopher’s, with patients and their friends and families regularly enjoying a variety of art-based therapy practices. During the pandemic, many events at the Hospice have had to be postponed or cancelled altogether, making it even more important than ever to raise funds to ensure that patients and their families and carers can continue to receive life changing support at the end of life.
Joining established artists such as Edmund de Waal, Humphrey Ocean, Sokari Douglas Camp and Alex Gamsu Jenkins are celebrities Joanna Lumley, Jayne Torvill and St Christopher’s ambassador Tom Allen, who have each submitted their own specially designed postcard to go up for grabs. Also in the mix are lots designed by St Christopher’s residents themselves, as well local children and charity supporters alike, making it even more of a challenge trying to guess who created what! Keen-eyed art lovers may be able to recognise the style of their favourites before the big reveal, and the race will be on to secure coveted pieces before becoming outbid…
All proceeds from the Mystery Masterpieces auction will help to fund vital hospice care across South London; which is provided through nurses, support staff and St Christopher’s world-class education programme – so don’t forget to set a reminder for Thursday 9th September, when you can browse the gallery and start placing your bids!
Current participating artists include:
Edmund de Waal, Humphrey Ocean, Sokari Douglas Camp, Richard Spare, Alex Gamsu Jenkins, Lionel Stanhope, Jake Tilson, Jess Blandford, Frances Aviva Blane, Nathan Bowen, Barnaby Barford and Vic Lee.
