Encounters, at the Jeannie Avent Gallery in East Dulwich, is an exhibition of street photography and portraits from India and Bangladesh. It is the work of traveller, writer and photographer Adrian Whittle and follows his recent successful show, Travels With My Camera in the Barbican Library Gallery. Encounters includes new work from 2023, much of it shown for the first time.

Adrian, who is the former Head of Culture, Libraries, Learning and Leisure for Southwark Council says “For me a photograph is often the culmination of a longer exchange with a stranger who initially interests me because of their face, clothing, or activity. I often spend time with them, asking about their lives and listening to their stories. People will reveal quite intimate things about themselves if someone shows interest, even a stranger. Of course, this means that I must be prepared to answer quite searching questions too, including about my family, income and marital status!”

The exhibition includes portraits, candid street shots and the stories behind some of the pictures. Adrian often keeps in contact with the subjects of his photography, searching them out on return visits to their cities and presenting them with copies of their pictures. He also writes about travel and architecture and is a regular contributor to specialist culture and architecture magazines. Visitors to the exhibition will be able to purchase prints, postcards and a limited-edition book.
