Man up! Don’t cry like a girl! Stop being such a girl! All phrases that children have heard over the years and yet so damaging for both boys and girls. It teaches boys to push down and ignore their feelings, and tells girls that doing anything ‘like a girl’ is bad.
Suzanne Hemming, an East Dulwich resident for over 18 years, and the author of three award-winning children’s books, is hoping to change those messages our children receive with her latest book, How Frank Helped Hank; and she’s crowdfunding to raise £25,000 to put 5,000 copies into key stage 1 classrooms around the UK.
Let’s change the messages that our children receive so they learn that it’s ok for boys to cry.
