The Last Word: East Dulwich WI Street Dance Crew – WIversity

Fiona, Sarah, Anna, Angela, Pam and Tina from the East Dulwich Women’s Institute, took part in in the hit SKY 1 TV show, Ashley Banjo’s Secret Street Crew.  You will be able to watch them in action this Sunday 5th October at 6pm on Sky 1 HD. Around Dulwich caught up with the ladies over a glass of wine (or five) and invited them to have the Last Word this week.  Unfortunately, Fiona could not be there due to work commitments but you can read her Last Word from last week here. Tune it to Ashley Banjo’s Secret Street Crew this Sunday 5th October, at 6pm, on Sky 1 HD to see how #WIversity got on in their challenge.

The Last Word: Fiona Nott

Fiona lives in East Dulwich with her partner. She is a self-employed retail consultant and works with a variety of clients around the UK. Every year she hosts an Open House at the end of September to raise funds for Macmillan. How long have you lived in the area? I rented a flat in East Dulwich when I first moved to London almost 30 years ago before moving to Herne Hill and West Dulwich. Fifteen years ago, wanting a garden and more space than I could afford in SE21, I bought a house in East Dulwich – and it was the best decision I have ever made! In December my boyfriend moved in and he is already a big SE22 fan. What do you most value about the area/street you live in? I absolutely love the area – it is so friendly and you can’t walk down Lordship Lane or pop out for a drink without bumping into someone you know which is really unusual in London. There is such a great choice of bars …

East Dulwich WI take part in hit Sky 1 TV Show, Ashley Banjo’s Secret Street Crew

Finally, the cat’s out of the bag!  It has been absolute torture for us to keep this a secret for so long, but we can FINALLY reveal that last summer, East Dulwich WI members Tina Hampson, Fiona Nott, Pam Martin, Anna Gryce, Sarah Pylas and SE Magazine’s very own Angela Burgess, took part in the hit SKY 1 TV show, Ashley Banjo’s Secret Street Crew. If you are not familiar with the show, each episode follows a group of non-dancers as they secretly attempt to learn a street dance routine choreographed by 2009 Britain’s Got Talent winner Ashley Banjo and his street dance troupe Diversity. After 3-weeks of intense rehearsals with Ashley and WIversity group mentors, Jordan Banjo and Perri Kiely, the ladies then performed their routine to an unsuspecting group of friends, family and fellow WI members at a charity cake bake competition. There were highs and lows, ups and downs (literally) and a whole load of belly laughs. We don’t want to give too much away, but you can see how the ladies got on by tuning …

The Last Word: Anna Gryce – President of the East Dulwich WI

Anna is a 40-something interior designer, who runs her own interior design business, Strictly Design. She is also the President of the East Dulwich WI, and a keen croquet player. How long have you lived in the area? I have lived in ED for nearly fifteen years now. Living south of the river wasn’t cool then, and house prices were much more affordable. I feel very lucky that chance led me to settle here. What has changed most during that time? There is so much more to do in the area now. From the buzzing high street shops, to all the really great places to eat and drink, and not forgetting of course, the brilliant community spirit. Where are you likely to be found on Saturday? Most likely queuing outside William Rose or Moxons with the rest of East Dulwich. I like to cook on a Saturday night, trying out new recipes and inviting friends along to test them out. What’s your favourite place to go for a drink? The House of Tippler after work …
