Dan co-owns ed, The Dulwich Trader & Tomlinsons with his wife, Katharine. ed on North Cross Road celebrated its 25th birthday this month.
How long have you lived in the area?
I no longer live in East Dulwich but have schooled, lived or worked in the area since I was 11 years old.
What has changed most during that time?
The sense of community has always remained strong in East Dulwich. Sadly, many local wonderful businesses have departed over the years, replaced in many cases by chains but there are a few key businesses hanging in there keeping the independent spirit alive.
Do you know your neighbours?
We live on a wonderful triangle of roads with a real mix of ages and backgrounds, we get together for a street party every year to share food, drink and a good time. There’s always a baking competition, karaoke (which I stay well clear of) and tug of war which is usually one sided as we live on a very steep hill.
The most famous person you’ve seen or met?
I was lucky enough to work with some incredible people in my old life working in events – Nelson Mandela and Pele were highlights.
Do you belong to any groups?
Tired, grumpy middle-aged men
Where are you likely to be found on Saturday?
Unless there are any issues in the shops Saturday is usually a day off, most of the day is spent ferrying kids around but I do like to get up early and go climbing (indoors) – it’s a great physical and mental workout. Come the summer I like to get climbing outdoors as much as possible, but life tends to get in the way.
What is your favourite place to eat?
Always have a wonderful time at Franklins on Lordship Lane, we have had some very special family meals there over the years.
Coffee or tea? Where?
Tea, at home in the kitchen watching the comings and the goings on the bird feeder in the garden.
Cafe, pub or bar?
I love a cafe and am finding the loss of the Dulwich Café hard to take.
What’s your favourite place to go for a drink?
I am no longer often out in East Dulwich in the evening but when I am it is usually the stylishly cosy Kix Bar + Kitchen on North Cross Road.
The best kept secret…
Not telling
Where’s your favourite place to walk?
We’re lucky to have lots of great places close by – many happy memories made in Dulwich Woods with the kids. As long as you can turn a blind eye to the occasional shopping trolley, South Norwood Country Park is a great place for a stroll with lots of wildlife on offer.
If money was no object..
I’d be climbing, cycling and diving my way around the world – Katharine and the kids probably would opt out so I’d be visiting them at various luxury resorts along the way no doubt!
My perfect holiday..
Not one for sitting still, we went to Crete with the kids last year and I took myself off climbing for a day which was to everyone’s benefit.
