The Last Word: Fiona Nott

Fi lunch 3 fav

Fiona lives in East Dulwich with her partner. She is a self-employed retail consultant and works with a variety of clients around the UK. Every year she hosts an Open House at the end of September to raise funds for Macmillan.

How long have you lived in the area?

I rented a flat in East Dulwich when I first moved to London almost 30 years ago before moving to Herne Hill and West Dulwich. Fifteen years ago, wanting a garden and more space than I could afford in SE21, I bought a house in East Dulwich – and it was the best decision I have ever made! In December my boyfriend moved in and he is already a big SE22 fan.

What do you most value about the area/street you live in?

I absolutely love the area – it is so friendly and you can’t walk down Lordship Lane or pop out for a drink without bumping into someone you know which is really unusual in London. There is such a great choice of bars and restaurants and if that wasn’t enough the Ritzy cinema is opening in December so I can indulge my love of the cinema without waiting for the 37 bus – perfect.

Do you belong to any groups?

I am a member of the East Dulwich WI and have made some lovely friends since I joined. Six of us took part in Ashley Banjo’s Secret Street Crew last year and it is airing on October 5th so I am slightly nervous but hopefully it will show there is more to the WI than making jam!

What is your favourite place to eat?

Whether it’s a sneaky quick(ish) lunch with the girls in the week, chilled out supper with the other half or Sunday lunch with friends, it has to be The Palmerston. The food is always delicious, it seems perfect for both casual get togethers or celebration events and I’ve always had great service. Even if we are not eating there, we regularly end up stopping off on our way home for a couple of drinks.

What’s your favourite place to go for a drink?

The Great Exhibition – we love the relaxed atmosphere and friendly staff but it’s so good in there we often seem to extend our stay for longer than the planned “quick drink”.

Where’s your favourite place to walk?

Anywhere by the water – river, lake or sea

When I want to relax…

It’s rare I get the time but it would have to be reading a great book on the Kindle.

The book I’m reading at the moment…

The Shadow of the Wind by Carlos Luiz Zafron

My secret ambition

I have hosted an Open House in September to raise funds for Macmillan for a number of years now and to date we have raised £6500 and my target is to raise £10,000 by September 2016. It started as a few friends round for coffee but has expanded into a two-day event raising over £1250 last year and with this year’s event underway I am hoping for another great total. I love a target and that would be such a milestone to reach but this is the first time I have admitted what I hope to achieve and by when.

Visit the Macmillan website for more information on the World’s Biggest Coffee Morning and how you can get involved.

The episode of Ashley Banjo’s Secret Street Crew featuring The East Dulwich WI airs on Sky 1 HD, Sunday 5th October, at 6pm.
