North Dulwich Lawn Tennis Club has recently been invited to participate in the Bright Ideas for Tennis 24 hour tennis marathon being played on 21/22 February 2015 at the National Tennis Centre in Roehampton. With a number of other clubs, a team from NDLTC will be playing against 12 Davis Cup players; Danny Sapsford (founder of Bright Ideas for Tennis) will play for the entire 24 hr period, along with Stuart Rhodes (benefactor of Bright Ideas for Tennis). This will be the the second year that the marathon has taken place, but this is NDLTC’s first appearance.
The tennis marathon is organised by Bright Idea for Tennis, a charity formed to allow tennis clubs to raise funds for their own projects.
For the last few months NDLTC has been raising funds to contribute to the cost of resurfacing two shale courts at the club which are essentially unplayable during the winter months. The total cost of resurfacing the two courts is some £65,000. Funds raised from our participation in the 24 hour tennis marathon will be put towards this cause.
The club’s fundraising efforts have included two Davis Cup days on June 8 and October 11 2014, both of which were organised with the assistance of Bright Ideas for Tennis. The June day was the most successful fundraiser of all of the Davis Cup days that were organised by Bright Ideas for Tennis at some 50 clubs across the south of England. As a reward for that success, the October Davis Cup day involved Bright Ideas for Tennis’s ambassador, Tim Henman. Further details of both days and the support received by the club to date are available on the club’s website.
NDLTC is very grateful for all of the support that they have received to date towards the resurfacing project, and would be extremely grateful for any sponsorship you are able to give as they participate in the tennis marathon. They have set up a BT My Donate page here.
The tennis marathon starts at 12pm on 21st February at The National Tennis Centre, and is free to watch for anybody who may be interested. NDLTC will be playing from 8am to 12 pm on 22 February (at the very end of the marathon).
