Laura Hepworth is a Conceptual Artist; her work explores process through themes of creativity and connection. Laura recently made her sixth London appearance in her exhibition ‘Land Over Sea’ with local ceramicist Katie Iacovou at the Jeannie Avent Gallery on Northcross Road, East Dulwich.
How long have you lived in the area?
I have lived in South East London my entire life. I grew up in Honor Oak Park but I have recently moved in with my partner of nine years in East Dulwich.
What do you value most about the area/street you live in?
As a local independent artist living in the heart of South East London, I find myself surrounded by an unbelievable and ever-growing mass of community spirit. From local artists to small businesses, there is a connectivity each one of us has and by helping each other, we help ourselves to grow. That is the reason Dulwich makes for such a vibrant place to live.
Do you belong to any groups?
First Friday, a wonderful networking group run by Marketing Consultant and Owner of Space at 61 in Nunhead, Shona Chambers. This group is an amazing community of support, with new faces from strong diverse working backgrounds, some of whom I’ve had the pleasure of working with, such as local catering company MIG Catering and Shannon Reed of Mockingbird Makes.
The one thing you couldn’t live without?
My journal and pen. Creativity springs to us in the moments we least expect it to, so that way I am able to capture the idea as it comes! This is the first and most important way I can begin to visualise an idea and process it within my mind, before applying it on to the surface of a canvas or a piece of paper. The pages of my journal are the birthing place to so many ideas, resolved and unresolved.
Where are you likely to be found on a Saturday?
Saturdays are for catching up with family and friends, so a great deal of time is spend sitting in coffee shops such as Kanella & Co and South East Cakery enjoying a good cup of coffee and a piece of cake!
Coffee & Tea? Where?
Coffee, Cappuccinos and iced lattes for when the sun comes out! My go to coffee stops are Kanella & Co in Lordship Lane, South East Cakery in Upland Road and Two Spoons in Honor Oak Park. These all have a lovely, friendly, relaxing atmosphere and are excellent family-friendly locations.
What is your favourite shop?
Pearspring on Lordship Lane is one of my favourite independent shops in Dulwich. What can I say…Beautiful and exotic plants accompanied with warm and friendly staff, all under one roof!
When I want to relax?
I look to create new work within my home studio, reading for pleasure, working my way through all of the TV series and Films on Netflix and going for long walks around the local area.
The most famous person you’ve seen or met?
I used to live around the corner from Timothy Spall and used to bump into him on a regular basis in our local corner shop. And now living in Dulwich, I have crossed paths with a few other big names including James Nesbitt, Micky Flanagan, and Richard Ayoade.
My perfect holiday
A week off to my favourite Greek Island, Zante. Sitting on a sunbed with nothing but a good book and clear blue skies above!
