East Dulwich card shop Postmark named UK’s ‘Best Greeting Card Retailer’ 

East Dulwich card shop ‘Postmark’ has beaten off stiff competition from the likes of Tesco, WHSmith and The Card Factory to be named the UK’s Best Greeting Card Retailer, 2017. Postmark, who have four shops in south and west London, including one on North Cross Road in East Dulwich,  was named the UK’s ‘Best Greeting Card Retailer’ 2017 at this year’s RETA’s, which recognises the importance of retailers to the success of the British Greeting Card industry, estimated to be worth around £1.7bn a year, supporting almost 100,000 jobs across the country. The family run, independent retailer also picked up a separate award for their monthly ‘Feel Good Friday’ campaign, which encourages people to send cards ‘just because’ offering a free card and postage to anywhere in the UK to anyone interested in taking part. Run by husband and wife team Mark and Leona Janson-Smith, they currently have four shops – Balham, Dulwich, Greenwich and Chiswick – and champion the very best of UK and internationally designed cards and stationery. The Charter School East Dulwich – Big Lottery Awards to All

Students, Staff and Parents of The Charter School East Dulwich, a new secondary school serving the communities of South Camberwell and East Dulwich, are celebrating receiving a grant of over £9,000 from the Big Lottery Awards for All Scheme. When the school opened its temporary premises on Southampton Way, the existing playground was an uninviting and barren place. It was very quickly identified as a priority to improve the facilities for the hundreds of young students who would be using it over the next 2 years. With the help of the newly formed school fundraising committee, committed parents Beth Follini and Natasha Soares worked together to draft the bid to Big Lottery supported by the school. After several months of writing and re-writing, the bid was submitted and we were delighted to find out we were successful in being awarded a grant to fund a range of sports equipment, a container garden and an outdoor mural that can all be moved to the school’s permanent site on East Dulwich Grove. Ex-Dragons’ Den Theo Paphitis backs Alhambra Tiles

A Sydenham company which imports an exclusive range of handmade tiles from Spain has added a former ‘Dragon’ to its list of admirers. Alhambra Tiles Ltd has been presented with a Small Business Sunday Award from former Dragons’ Den star Theo Paphitis. Mr Paphitis, who appeared on the hit BBC TV show from 2005 to 2012, runs the awards, which aim to support small businesses. Alhambra was chosen out of thousands of firms who applied, and received the award at the ICC in Birmingham last Friday 3 Feb. The company sources a range of handmade tiles, marble and terracotta, offering bespoke designs as standard. Founded in 2009 by Rebecca Leathlean, Alhambra has supplied prestigious clients such as Mary Portas and Levi Roots, and collaborated with top interior designers including local Forest Hill design duo, Jordan Cluroe and Russell Whitehead, aka 2 Lovely Gays. Around Dulwich Shortlisted for Best Website!

We are beside ourselves with excitement at AD HQ today following the official announcement from the Association of Independent Magazine Publishers that Around Dulwich has been shortlisted for Best Website at their annual awards ceremony next month! Not only that but our mothership, SE Magazines, has been shortlisted for Best Social Media Presence too! The awards celebrate the country’s best community and lifestyle magazines in a multitude of categories including Best Magazine Design, Inspirational Business Owner, Best Front Cover and Best Editorial News Item. SE Magazines and Around Dulwich Editor, Angela Burgess said: “I am delighted that all the hard work Sarah and I have put in to Around Dulwich has been recognised.  We receive fabulous support from the community with their stories and event contributions, which make Around Dulwich the fabulous site it is!” The winners will be announced on 2nd October.

Young Sydenham High photographer wins international acclaim

Talented young Sydenham High photographer Olivia Bertie has won international acclaim in a photographic contest with her first wildlife assignment. 14-year old Olivia’s fun photo of greedy chimps filling their mouths with apples, has won her both a national and international award from National Geographic in a competition run in their Kids magazine. ‘Any more apples?’ not only took the UK ‘Weird But True’ category prize but went on to scoop the international prize in the same category as well. Olivia was also the youngest winner in the whole competition and can now claim to be one of the best young photographers in the world, says Tim Herbert, the magazine’s editor. The competition attracted 16,500 entries from around the world. Although Olivia is already a keen landscape photographer, this was the first time that she had focused on wildlife.  The photo was taken at Edinburgh Zoo last Summer and was a really lucky break – a case of patience and being in the right position at the right time.
