The Davis Cup really did come to North Dulwich Lawn Tennis Club on Sunday 8th June. It was a memorable experience for all who came along, whether they were playing or just enjoying the glorious summer sunshine with a glass of Pimm’s and something from the barbecue.
North Dulwich played host to two former Davis Cup players, Danny Sapsford and Andrew Richardson from Bright Ideas for Tennis. The day was a roaring success – starting with a coaching session for the 4 – 10 year olds, and culminating in an exhibition doubles match, followed by the drawing of the raffle prizes.
Bright Ideas for Tennis operates to support tennis clubs across the UK increase their membership numbers, raise levels of participation and improve their playing facilities.
The aim of the North Dulwich Bright Ideas for Tennis day was to raise funds to upgrade the club’s facilities and to allow the club to continue its coaching work.
Working with North Dulwich’s own coaches Peter Wright, John Connolly and Chris Barker, Danny and Andrew put all age groups and playing standards through their paces – 4 – 10 year olds, teenagers, adult intermediate and adult beginners.
The fastest serve competition at lunchtime was won by a 99mph ace from the racquet of Simon Gane, with a 98mph service from Gavin Fullstone just behind.
The Club was extremely lucky to receive support for the day from many local and regional businesses, by way of generous donations of cash, food and drink for sale on the day and prizes for the raffle. All of the businesses are listed on the club’s website, but special mention must go to KFH for kindly donating an iPad Air as a main raffle prize, and to Bright Ideas for Tennis who donated a shirt signed by Tim Henman. Support was also gratefully received from Dr Boo, Stella C, Café Rouge, The Crown & Greyhound, Costco, ESPH Gym, Franklins, Gambado, GBK, InterSport, Kos, Sandra Kuehl, Moxon’s, The Palmerston, Pedder, Pizza Express, Property In.com, Rocca, Mark Rusher, Village Books, William Rose.
If North Dulwich raises more than any other club in the UK that hosts a Bright Ideas for Tennis day, Danny will come back to play an exhibition match at North Dulwich in October with Tim Henman. The day was a great success, but will they raise enough to see Tim and Danny battle it out on the courts of North Dulwich?
