Three of Lewisham Council’s regeneration projects have been shortlisted in the 2020 Building London Planning Awards. These awards celebrate outstanding town planning and development in London and showcase the diverse talent working across the built environment sector.
Beckenham Place Park is nominated in the ‘Heritage and Culture’ category; council-housing development Bampton Estate for ‘Best New Place to Live;’ and Catford town centre in the ‘Community Engagement in the Planning Process’ category.
The nomination for Beckenham Place Park particularly focuses on the restoration of the Grade II listed Georgian stable block and surrounding stable courtyard – now home to a new café and environmental education centre serving Lewisham and beyond. The stables opened in the summer, giving the public access for the first time in decades and offering beautiful views over the extended gardens and parkland. The restoration is part of the Council’s wider regeneration of Beckenham Place Park, which has opened up the greenspace so it can be enjoyed by everyone.
Nominated for ‘Best new place to live,’ the Bampton Estate housing development in Perry Vale, which has recently been granted planning permission, will provide council homes to be let at social rents for residents over 55 years of age. This five-storey residential building will include 39 one-bedroom flats, with extensive landscaping and a communal courtyard looking out onto Bampton Green.
Nominated for ‘Community Engagement in the Planning Process’ Team Catford has been engaging with the local community since 2017. Through their extensive pre-planning stakeholder engagement, they have gathered over 2,200 comments from local people. Face-to-face engagement has allowed the team to gather valuable data, which has helped shape the emerging draft framework plan, which will be shared with local community in spring 2020.
The Building London Planning Awards will take place on January 28 2020 at Landing Forty Two in the The Leadenhall Building, London. Now in its 17th year, it is organised by London First in partnership with the Mayor of London, London Councils, the Planning Officers Society London and the Royal Town Planning Institute.
