Jeremy Deller launches online Thinking About lecture series for Southwark Schools’ Learning Partnership students

Turner prize winner Jeremy Deller, artist Lisa Milroy, and historian and writer Iain MacGregor are amongst the speakers lined up for Thinking About, a series of live weekly lectures with Q&As aimed at students in Years 11, 12 and 13. Guests from the Arts, Sciences and Humanities will all set out to give exclusive insights into their professional lives.

In the inaugural talk on 12 May, Jeremy Deller will be ‘Thinking About’ his role as an artist and an observer of people and events. As he looks at the world from his window – the title he’s given his talk, referencing one of his earliest art works – he proves himself to be adept at weaving together high and low culture, the popular and the rarefied. An alumnus of Dulwich College, Jeremy Deller will revisit his past, look at current events and delve into a number of possible futures.

Thinking About has been organised and curated by Dulwich College, an independent boys school in south London, and SSLP (Southwark Schools’ Learning Partnership), a collaboration between 17 local schools based in, and around, the London Borough of Southwark. Future speakers for June will include experts in the fields of Chemistry and Languages. Where possible, recordings of the lectures and Q&As will be available on the Dulwich College and SSLP websites.

Dr Joe Spence, a co-Director of SSLP and the Master of Dulwich College, commented: “We are delighted that so many leaders in their fields have agreed to share their experience and insights. Creativity and shared ideas and opportunities have been encouraged even more than ever during lockdown, and virtual learning and zoomed lectures are bringing us closer together, which in the borough of the size of Southwark is excellent news for all. Our SSLP students will be inspired by hearing from our guests about their careers and creativity – and learn that artists have careers and that scientists need to be creative.”
