To celebrate 100 years since the building of the ‘Homes Fit for Heroes’ at the Sunray and Casino Estates, Bell House, the Dulwich Society and Southwark Council are offering a series of free events celebrating these notable estates.
Southwark Council’s exhibition covering the history of the borough’s social housing will be on display at Bell House. To mark 100 years since the first phase of the Casino and Sunray Estates, the notable ‘Homes Fit for Heroes’ developments, Ian McInnes, Chair of the Dulwich Society, will lead two walks around the estates. The story of how Camberwell Council and the Office of Works built the estates in the 1920s is quite well known but, as ever in Dulwich, the story is more complicated. A talk by Ian McInnes will fill in many of the gaps and also show how the local position related to the bigger picture of building better housing for the returning soldier nationwide.
