Rembrandt’s Light

Experience a cinematic retelling of the Dutch Master’s pivotal years… An enduring storyteller; a master of light – Rembrandt is one of the greatest painters who ever lived. This landmark exhibition celebrates 350 years since his death with 35 of his iconic paintings, etchings and drawings, including major international loans from The Louvre and Amsterdam’s Rijksmuseum.

Unlocking Paintings: Artists in Amsterdam
Until 12 January 2020

Included in Gallery admission. This display explores the city of Amsterdam during the 17th century, when it became the new economic superpower in Europe, providing a wealth of opportunities for young painters to make their mark. Discover personal stories from key artists in our Collection; including works by Meindert Hobbema, Jacob van Ruisdael and Willem van de Velde II, from tales of invention and ingenuity to fortune and loss, all against the backdrop of an ambitious, fast-moving city.

Panel Discussion: Women in the Arts
12 November, 7pm

£12 adults; £10 Friends & concessions. Despite a majority female workforce, key leadership roles in the arts sector are often held by men. Join Jennifer Scott, Director of Dulwich Picture Gallery, Carla van de Puttelaar, photographer and creator of the series Artfully Dressed, and Lisa Anderson, founder of the online platform Black British Art, for a discussion regarding their own careers and experiences as women in the arts. The panel will be chaired by journalist and former Arts-Editor-In-Chief at The Telegraph, Sarah Crompton.

Contextual Lecture: Europe Now – After Brexit

£12 adults; £10 Friends & concessions. Martin Wolf is the Chief Economics Commentator of the Financial Times and author of prize-winning economic analyses. He will consider what the economic landscape of Europe will look like after Brexit.

Rembrandt Late: Illuminate
22 November, 6-10pm

Free, but ticketed. Advance booking recommended. Brighten up a winter’s evening with exclusive after-hours access to our blockbuster exhibition, Rembrandt’s Light. Try your hand at ‘light drawing’ with Tine Bech Studio, experts in experiential light installations, give mindfulness and ‘slow looking’ a go, or simply take it all in with a delicious cocktail.

Bright Rooms: Analogue Photography Workshop
16 November, 11am-3.30pm, £45

Peckham-based photography specialists Bright Rooms give a taster class exploring two analogue processes – polaroid lift technique and shooting portraits on direct positive paper. Experiment with lighting your subject and come away with several beautiful portraits to keep.

Yoga & Rembrandt’s Light
24 November, Arrive at 8.30am for registration

£25; £12 Friends & concessions. Start your Sunday with yoga in the Soane Gallery, with morning sun streaming through the skylights. Each session is led by British Wheel of Yoga teachers and is followed by early access to Rembrandt’s Light. Suitable for all levels except complete beginners. Ticket includes entry to the exhibition and tea/coffee voucher for the Gallery Café.

Art Sundays
Sundays throughout November

Free, drop-in sessions. Sunday is art day! Come along to the Gallery every Sunday for a drop-in family art-making workshop. Each week there will be a different theme for you to explore and something for you to take away as a momento. Suggested age: 4-12 yrs.

Early Years

Mini Masterpieces
21 November, 10-11am & 11.30am-12.30pm

£12 per adult and child. Discover all of the different people, places and animals in the Gallery’s paintings in these interactive workshops. Each session begins with a journey through the Gallery, followed by an art-making activity. Suggested age: 6–24 months.

Art Adventurers
22 November, 10-11am

£12 per adult and child. Are you and your little one ready for an adventure? Each month join our Early Years mascot, Jerome the Lion, as he takes you on a journey through the Gallery. Dance, sing and play your way around our paintings, before enjoying a messy artmaking session. Our themes change monthly to keep your little ones engaged. Suggested age: 2-4 yrs.

Allegri String Quartet Concert
27 November, 7.30pm

£22, Friends £20; under 18s £10. Inspired by Rembrandt’s Light and the theme of illumination the UK’s longest running chamber group, the Allegri Quartet, perform music by JS Bach from The Art of Fugue, the Beethoven Quartet Op 131, and Smetana’s Quartet no 1, From My Life.
