Halloween costumes have been put away and pumpkins have been recycled into soup, risottos, and pies, or just left outside to rot in the garden. The kids have returned to school for the autumn term and local shop windows are already starting to look festive. However, there is still much to do in and around Dulwich before we dive fizz-first into the silly season!
The annual family fireworks display at Dulwich Sports Club on Saturday 4th November is guaranteed to light up your dark November nights. This year promises more food and beverage stalls than ever before including a bonfire, mulled wine, real ale, BBQ, and kids bar. Arrive early to get a good spot – and that’s just for parking!
Later this same night, Plosive launches a brand new comedy night at The MCT at Alleyn’s featuring big-name headliners and handpicked favourites from the alternative circuit.
Village Books have a number of inspiring events lined up again this month. On Sunday 5th, Newsnight presenter Evan Davis shares his thoughts on ‘Why we have reached Peak Bullshit and what we can do about it’; and bestselling author, Phillip Pullman, talks writing and storytelling on 7th.
Another highlight of the month is the annual Dulwich Literary Festival at Dulwich College, which is running from 10-12 November this year and features Alan Hollinghurst, Ali Smith, Simon Jenkins and Alexei Sayle as well as a fun children’s programme. It is a truth universally acknowledged that the Mozart Requiem is one of the masterpieces of choral music and The Concordia Chamber Choir is proud to be performing it as the centrepiece of their autumn concert at All Saints’ Church on 11th.
Experience an evening with Fords Gin at House of Tippler on 16th in which you will journey through the years of gin, from the early days of gin punch up to the current Golden Age of the Cocktail. You will learn how the rise and fall of gin and cocktails have been intertwined through history whilst enjoying 6 of the important cocktails that form the rich fabric of gin’s history. Also raising money for Link Age Southwark – on 23rd November – is caterer extraordinaire, Suzanne James, who will be hosting a supper at her Barry Road premises in aid of this wonderful charity.
The end of the month will bring with it our first dollop of Christmas cheer when The Charter School in Herne Hill opens its gates for their annual Christmas Fair on Thursday 23rd. Meanwhile, Love West Dulwich, St. Augustine’s Church, Forest Hill Methodist Church, The Friends of Dulwich College and Havelock Walk are all holding Christmas Fairs on the weekend of Saturday 25th – Sunday 26th.
As the nights turn colder, your thoughts may turn to winter fashion and so the Jaadu Autumn/Winter Fashion Show at Café Rouge in West Dulwich could be right up your catwalk. Jaadu will be presenting inspiring and stylish clothes to raise money for the charity, Karuna, and to introduce their new Style Studio. Plus, there will be Prosecco…
