Join us for a FREE outdoor performance of one of Shakespeare’s most popular plays, in a new production by the award-winning Illyria theatre company. Performed in the academy’s grounds, Illyria will recreate the feel of a travelling company of the early 17th century to bring Shakespeare’s rollicking tale of love magically to life for all the family. As You Like It is Shakespeare’s ultimate romantic comedy. Four people find their perfect soulmates in the Forest of Arden. But pitted against political intrigue, multiple disguises and overwhelming cynicism, can even love win though in the end? With its pearls of wisdom, glittering repartee and gloriously happy ending this is not only one of Shakespeare’s most popular plays but also the perfect comedy for a summer’s evening. No other touring open-air theatre company has performed so many different Shakespeare titles to so many people, winning so many awards, as Illyria. They perform on a stage based on those used by 16th-century touring companies, with only a handful of props, no scenery and with only five actors. But they are renowned for the refreshing originality of their productions and their outstandingly enjoyable theatre. Don’t miss this FREE performance (approximately 2hrs 30mins including 20 minute interval). Suitable for all ages. Please bring your own seating/rug, picnic and warm clothes. The Artists and Artisans of The Arches Studios proudly welcome you to their Summer Open Studios Event. Anyone living in the vicinity of Peckham and even further afield will have noticed that the area is increasingly being recognised in the fashionable pages as the new hotbed of creative talent in the capital, something that the scores of creative individuals and businesses that have made it their home have known and thrived on for many years.

The long-standing community of Artists and Artisans know collectively as The Arches Studios, nestled in the railway arches behind Peckham Rye station, off Blenheim Grove, is geographically right at the center of this creative enclave and has over the years forged and cemented strong community ties. In what has become a local tradition dating back some 20 years, The Arches Studios will again be open to the public during the last weekend of June, providing a great opportunity to meet with artists in their own work-places, discuss their working practices and view a range of new and ongoing works for sale, in a relaxed and family-friendly environment.

Visitors will be greeted by a wide range of works from the fields of Ceramics, Sculpture, Fine Art and Print-making, for sale to suit a range of budgets as well as delicious snacks and refreshments throughout the weekend.

Many of you will be aware of the proposed development around the station, at the heart of Peckham’s Rye Lane, which is potentially an exciting and challenging opportunity for our creative enterprises as well as the wider community. We hope that this will be an artist/community-led development, sensitive and supportive to the dynamic and diverse nature of the existing culture as well as a stimulus for future growth. Peckham Vision (www.peckhamvision.org) the consortium of local residents, artists and businesses working together to improve Peckham town centre will be present with their mobile displays about the developments.

Disguised as a boy she seeks out her father and his friends in the Forest of Arden. Here she meets Orlando again and, under the guise of a young man, counsels him in the art of love, along the way discovering the true meaning of friendship and the enduring power of love.
