15 minutes with Jamie Younger

The Palmerston is one of my favourite places to eat and drink in East Dulwich.  This month they are celebrating 10 years in business, so I popped along for a cup of tea with owner and executive chef, Jamie Younger.

Jamie first came to East Dulwich to visit a friend.  After deciding he liked the area, he made the move himself.  Once established in East Dulwich, he felt the area was lacking a relaxed pub where you could get great food.  At the time there was only Franklins, which had a more restaurant feel.

Jamie met Paul Rigby (Owner of the Sea Cow) who had negotiated the lease of the then Lord Palmerston.  Along with Remi Olajoyegbe, they opened the doors of the Palmerston on 27th February 2004 and haven’t looked back.  The partners also used to run The Herne, but that was sold in May last year.

The great team at the Palmerston now includes Ellis Dickerson (who joined the team as manager in 2006) and James Donnelly (Head Chef).  Ellis and Jamie used to go to school together and Ellis even worked at Jamie’s parents’ restaurant in Cornwall!

The Fine Dining room opened last year and when the weather bucks up there is a fantastic decked balcony available to hire.  There are plenty of other plans for the Palmerston, so watch this space!

Jamie continues to live in the area with his partner Rema and their three young children, Bea, Grace and Oliver.
